Instagram’s Right to Sell a User’s Photo Without Permission

Instagram is the now popular free photo-sharing service bought by Facebook for around a billion dollars in April, having over 100 million registered users since Facebook’s acquisition. Confusion, anger and displeasure dominated the internet community with Facebook’s decision to update Instagram’s terms of service and privacy policy which were taken in the context of Facebook retaining the right to use publicly posted Instagram photos for any purpose it deems fit. This is according to the new terms of service posted by Facebook on December 17, 2012.

The new and updated terms and privacy policy will be introduced and be effective on January 16, 2013. The updated terms posted insinuated that Facebook/Instagram has the right to sell the Instagram photos without the need for permission from the owners of the photos. Worse, any revenue generated from such sale will not be shared with the Instagram photo owners.

The Monday post generated enough ire from Facebook and Instagram users, not understanding why such new policies will be implemented without regard for the users’ say on the matter. The issue took an instant, violent reactions to surface on the web as irate Instagram users criticize the new terms and policy.

The heat created by such reactions to the new terms elicited an immediate response from Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom who clarified the policy and made it clear on December 18, 2012 that Instagram will not sell user photos without their permission, pointing to the wordings used in the new terms of service as to be blamed for the confusion.

Advertise Your Products/Services/Brand -- Online Marketing Outsourcing

The Instagram co-founder explained that the reason for updating the terms of service was to communicate to the users about Instagram’s plan to experiment with innovative advertising which was wrongly interpreted by many.Systrom explained that the update was brought about by an “advertising scheme on Instagram that might include promoted posts, and in order to help make a relevant promotion, it would be helpful to see which of the people you follow also follow the business.” In such case, it will be inevitable to see some of the data posted, like the actions taken and the profile photo, show up in the ads.

As a matter of clarification, Systrom made it clear that Instagram has no intention of selling the user’s photos. Where the language in the terms of service caused the confusion, Systrom informed the public that the same language will be removed to fix the mistake and eliminate the confusion.

Systrom continued by stressing that Instagram users own their photos and that Instagram wants its users to feel comfortable sharing photos and that will be respected. In conclusion Systrom confirmed that privacy settings will remain intact as the public is advised to check the new updated terms that will remove the confusing wordings and clear up any misunderstanding of Instagram’s real intention.

7 Tips for Effective Negative Keyword PPC Management

7 Tips for Effective Negative PPC Keyword Management -- Outsource internet marketing

Negative keywords are those words or phrases that disallow your PPC ad from displaying for search terms which are unrelated to your website. Hence, in paid advertising, negative keyword management is an important foundation of an effective and fruitful PPC campaign. If properly managed by any internet marketing outsourcing company, negative keywords will improve your CTR (click-through rate), increase the relevancy of the audience and essentially, save you money.

It is therefore important that proper management of the negative keywords is implemented in order to maximize the effectiveness of this PPC strategy. Most online marketing outsourcing companies are probably familiar with some of the listed considerations.

  1. Run and Rely on SQR (Search Query Report). This is the essence of the negative keyword technique because it will give you data where your ads showed and what terms were used that made the ads show up which are relevant and not relevant to the business. Generating the SQR is recommended done at least once a week for new accounts and every few minutes for more mature accounts.
  2. Separate Campaign and Ad Group level negatives. Identifying which keywords belong to campaign level and which terms belong to ad group level is important in achieving an effective negative keyword strategy. Campaign negative terms could be wide-ranging words for products that do not belong to your business. Ad group level terms are the more specific and targeted words.
  3. Negative Keyword Should Lead Users to the Right Place. Internet marketing company running PPC ads should use negative keywords to bring users to the specific landing page of your website to avoid overlap.
  4. Don’t add too many at once. Some outsource internet marketing campaigns for large accounts tend to overdo it by running huge SQR audits and including too many negative keywords in the campaign. With bulk negative uploads, it will be difficult to identify exactly which negative keywords caused the issue.
  5. Create a Negative Keyword Lists. Managing account-wide negative keyword lists should never be difficult. One way is to create a spreadsheet which breaks the list into 3 categories: list of negative keywords, why they are negative keywords and where such keywords are found in your PPC ad.
  6. Differentiate Irrelevant and Poor at Conversion. Some negative keywords are included in the list because they are irrelevant. Others, because they showed that they fail to convert. Caution should be exercised before lumping irrelevant and poor-converting negatives with the regular negative keywords. It might be better to spin them off into new lower-bid ad campaigns.
  7. Run Regular Checks on Your Existing Negative Keywords. In order to make sure that negative keywords in your list remain to be negative keywords over time, and not blocking traffic that is relevant to your site, you should run regular checking on your negatives every few months. Updating the list and aligning it with the latest activities of the business will eliminate missing out on traffic because the keyword has not been removed from the negative keyword list.

Understanding User Engagement: How to Measure It and Get People More Engaged

Measuring User Engagement -- Outsource Online Marketing

Measuring user engagement is critical to any online marketing effort. These measurements will tell you if there are areas in your website that need to be enhanced in terms of optimization elements; if the optimization technique is still effective or not, is your landing page well-optimized and provides answer to user query. Is your marketing material effective enough in triggering user behavior to get engaged with your business? Understanding these, the challenge now lies on how such user engagement can be measured and created.

Owners of business websites should know that not because they have a website running on the World Wide Web, they can just sit back and relax and wait for the successful conversion of leads. Assuming that the website is optimized for search engines, there can be an expected increase in traffic to the site. But why are there any conversions so far? What could be wrong with your website or your SEO techniques?

As a website owner, it is important to answer these questions as the answers would lead you to doing the one thing that you have so far neglected doing – measuring user engagement. You need to find out how the people visiting your site interact with your site. Do they stay long or do they quickly close the site and move on to the next one. Did they visit the other pages within the site?

Get People Engaged In Your Website -- Online Marketing Outsourcing

The following can help you measure user engagement and some tips on the side.

  • Search Engines and user engagement. By using Google Analytics, you can measure user engagement by setting goals for each action that you describe as engagement; define a non-brand keyword visits segment (they are the visitors landing on your website using keywords not related to your brand); check the keywords that win and those that lose. This should give you a general idea on how your website engaged the users. You might notice that some keywords trigger a better conversion rate than others.
  • Landing pages and user engagement. Discover the leaks from your landing pages as some users that come from certain keywords are likely to engage but the landing pages they end up with are not helpful. This should be resolved immediately so as not to waste the user already on your landing pages. Look for big bounce rates and take action against them. If need be, redesign the website or the landing pages in order to get the users engaged.
  • Behavioral targeting and user engagement. Click on the top pages and look for the entrance keywords report. Now check out the bounces for each keyword. A high diversity between bounce rates proves that different users visit with different intentions. Offer customized content like headings, call to actions which readers should find interesting and compelling them to take action.

Know though that user engagement is not one you can measure with a standard formula. It is a mix of quality and quantity metrics varying from website to website. However, users that post comment on your blogs, subscribe to your newsletter or RSS feed, submits a contact form, or buy something are the kind of users that engage.

It is very important to note how users behave when they visit your site to come up with tactics that will increase not only website traffic but conversion as well. Changes may be made to hit targeted goals and to attract more users to enter and be engaged with your website.

One of the many advantages of online marketing is that any online marketing experts or practitioners can easily track down data and measure the quality of their marketing material. From there on, they can easily improve their strategy and be more effective.
